Wilton Park Trench Fill Soil Modification

Furlong GS designed and treated excavated material at Wilton Park, Beaconsfield, for reuse as acceptable trench fill, working with Reynolds Groundwork Services and Thames Water on a modified soil backfill solution.

Project Overview

Excavated Material Reuse

Deep adoptable drainage works at Wilton Park generated approximately 3,000m3 of excavated material. Furlong GS worked closely with Reynolds Groundwork Services and Thames Water to develop a modified soil backfill solution, enabling site-won material to be reused rather than removed and replaced with imported trench fill.

Laboratory Testing and Treatment Design

Following analysis and laboratory testing of the host material, Furlong GS designed the soil modification for use as backfill with a minimum 5% CBR target. The case study references MCHW Series 600 and CC201 in its design approach.

Treatment and Compaction

A tractor-mounted WS250 Wirtgen mixer and Streumaster SW 3 AC binder spreader were selected to suit changing levels and working conditions. Excavated material was treated alongside the trench, placed as backfill and compacted using a machine-mounted padfoot compactor.

Project Benefits

The design and treatment package allowed the client to utilise site-won material as modified trench fill and save time and money. The published benefits charts report 50% cost saving, 45% programme reduction, 80% fewer vehicle movements, 80% less imported aggregate and 100% less material sent to landfill.

The Challenge

  • Approximately 3,000m3 of material was being excavated for deep adoptable drainage works.
  • The excavated material potentially required removal from site and replacement with imported trench fill.
  • Site level changes and working conditions required agile equipment and a practical treatment approach.

The Solution

  • Worked with the client team and Thames Water on a modified soil solution for trench backfill.
  • Analysed and laboratory-tested the site-won material, then designed its modification to achieve a minimum 5% CBR.
  • Used a tractor-mounted WS250 Wirtgen mixer and Streumaster SW 3 AC binder spreader.
  • Treated material alongside the trench before placement and compaction using a machine-mounted padfoot compactor.

The Outcome

  • Delivered a design and treatment package enabling excavated material to be reused as acceptable trench fill.
  • Completed the works within the reported 5-day programme.
  • The case study benefits charts report 50% cost saving, 45% programme reduction and 80% fewer vehicle movements.
  • The benefits charts also report 80% less imported aggregate and 100% less material sent to landfill.
