Project Overview
Reusing Excavated Material
The Becton project involved approximately 4,500m3 of excavated material that could not be reused as bulk fill without treatment. Furlong GS worked closely with Reynolds Groundwork Services to provide a design and treatment package, enabling the material to be improved for reuse on site rather than removed and replaced with imported fill. Earthworks were undertaken by the main contractor.
Laboratory Testing and Treatment Design
Following analysis and laboratory testing of the site-won material, Furlong GS designed the treatment plan to achieve a minimum 5.0% CBR in bulk fill and 15% CBR beneath foundations. The case study references MCHW Series 600 and CC201 in the design approach.
Ex-Situ Stabilisation and Layered Placement
The excavated material was treated and stabilised ex-situ alongside the works, then placed over the build-up area in 300mm layers and compacted. Foundations and trenches were subsequently excavated through the stabilised material, as shown in the project photographs.
Project and Client Benefits
The design and treatment package enabled site-won material to be used as acceptable bulk fill, saving time and money on the project. The published benefits charts report 50% cost saving, 45% programme reduction, 80% fewer vehicle movements, 80% less imported aggregate, 100% less material sent to landfill and 50% less stone layer depth.
